CTIA Fall 2009 Recap

After 3 days in San Diego, I am getting ready to head back home, so here is a recap of everything from the last few days.  My plan of attack for posting was simple – send in photos to my blog from my Verizon Blackberry 8330 Curve and AT&T Apple iPhone 3GS, as well as post longer articles of multi-photo composition using my Sony Cybershot, Mac Book Pro, and Sprint EVDO card.  The nice thing about this approach was the ability to send in photos on the fly as I saw interesting things, but then provide additional commentary and higher-res shots as well.

Wednesday – Day 1
Wednesday morning started out like each morning of the show, with a keynote address for some of the industry leaders speaking about the state of wireless, and their organization.  I posted these photos from the keynote:
Keynote about to start
2010 CTIA convention dates and locations
FCC Chairman Genachowski on stage
AT&T CEO de la Vega on stage
Yahoo Mobile SVP Ko on stage
Tax propaganda at the keynote
More Day 1 Keynote photos

Then I was off to hit the show floor, where I was able to snap some shots and post this article:
Day 1 show floor photos

To cap off the day, I attended the Mobile Focus event presented by Pepcom where I had some additional time with many of the great devices that are out there.  Manufacturers included RIM, Nokia, HTC and Motorola.  Here are the posts that I created from the event:
Samsung Moment
RIM
Nokia
Garmin Nuvifone
Motorola CLIQ
Novatel MiFi
Palm Pixi

Thursday – Day 2
Thursday started out with a keynote consisting of a panel discussion with the Co-Founder and CEO of Qualcomm, as well as the CTO of AT&T.  Here was the post from the keynote:
Day 2 Keynote

Thursday afternoon, I sat down to record a special podcast with Dieter Bohn from Smartphone Experts and Kevin Michaluk from Crackberry. We covered the latest from Blackberry, Nokia, Windows Mobile and Android as well as some great commentary about the main themes of the convention.  The show can be downloaded directly here:

Friday – Day 3
I spent most of the day Friday working on catching up from all the content that I had recorded and created throughout the week.  This was another great experience, and I am very happy to have been able to attend the show again this year.  There really is nothing like a cellular trade show for a Cell Phone Junkie.

The Cell Phone Junkie CTIA Fall 2009 Special Edition

Mickey Papillon from The Cell Phone Junkie, Dieter Bohn from Smartphone Experts and Kevin Michaluk from Crackberry all get together to discuss the Fall 2009 CTIA convention that took place this week in San Diego.  We cover the latest from Blackberry, Nokia, Windows Mobile and Android as well as some great commentary about the main themes of the convention.  If you’re a fan of cell phones, which we know you are, this is one show you don’t want to miss.

TCPJ Unlocked Show #032

We’re on the ground at the Fall 2009 CTIA conference in San Diego.  While we didn’t see many new devices come out of this show, there was a lot of great content.  This show features the keynote speeches of FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega.  You’ll hear Genachowski lay out a plan to address two of the wireless industry’s major policy complaints with four goals for the FCC that he said would aid the wireless industry in providing mobile broadband to consumers.  In the keynote appearance immediately AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega spoke out against the chairman’s net neutrality push.  de la Vega essentially argues against any regulation that could slow the industry’s growth. Specifically, de la Vega said the Internet should be free of regulation, and not subject to the net neutrality regulations that Genachowski has been pushing for.

CTIA 2009 – Day 2 Keynote

Day 2 of the Fall 2009 CTIA convention kicked off with a keynote address that had 2 different sections.  First, Co-Founder Irwin Jacobs, and CEO Paul Jacobs of Qualcomm sat down with Steve Largent to chat about the history of the company, and where they thought the industry was heading.

Then, Chief Technology Officer John Donovan of AT&T gave a fantastic presentation about the future of data, and how AT&T is planning it’s next few years.  This was the most interesting presentation in all the keynotes, as he was able to provide a large number of facts and statistics about the data use in the US.  Below are the slides from his presentation.

CTIA 2009 – Palm Pixi

That’s right, I was able to score a lot of time playing around with what could be the next device for my Cell Phone Junkie co-host Joey.  They have taken the great WebOS and put it into a very small “centro-like” package that is thin and light.  I was very happy to see that the small keyboard is very usable, and think that Sprint is really going to have a winner of a device with this one.

CTIA 2009 – Novatel MiFi

While not new, I hadn’t spent any hands on time with the Novatel MiFi before this week.  I love the size and functionality of the device, and feel this is the way that mobile broadband needs to go.  The MiFi is now available in CDMA variants here in the US, but they have an HSPA model for other networks around the world.  The guys at Novatel also mentioned that there would be HSPA announcements in the near future for here in the US.  Note the HSPA one is thicker, but it has some onboard linux software to allow applications such as VPN clients to run for the entire hotspot it creates.

CTIA 2009 – Motorola CLIQ

Motorola is putting all it’s eggs in the Android basket now, and is hoping the CLIQ will be the one that moves it forward.  I like the thinking, but with all the other HTC and Samsung Android phones that I saw this week, i am not guessing this is going to find its way into as many pockets as Motorola is hoping.

CTIA 2009 – Garmin Nuvifone

The hotly anticipated (and recently released) for AT&T Garmin Nuvifone got some hands on time.  I was absolutely stunned when I saw the UI on this phone, as it was not at all what I expected.  Instead of something “Windows Mobile-esque” it was like they just put a phone in a Garmin device.  Don’t get me wrong, this will definitely work for them, it was just not what I expected.
